SteelRanking quantifies the technical competitiveness of each enterprise. The grading evaluation method applied by SteelRanking is the new material index grading evaluation system.
Results of 2022 Technology Competitiveness Ranking of world steel enterprises
A total of 50 enterprises were shortlisted in this ranking. Among the top ten steel enterprises, Chinese steel enterprises accounted for half.Among the top three steel enterprises, China Baowu ranked first for the first time. S. Korea POSCO rose one place again compared with the previous year, ranking second. Japan Nippon Steel dropped two places to the third.
Note: In consideration of product structure characteristics, data independence and other conditions, enterprises with typical characteristics in the Group will be included in this ranking. For example, China Baowu and its affiliated enterprises, Ma steel and Taigang Stainness, are all listed in the ranking. Through this method, multi-dimensions of technological competitiveness of steel enterprises were displayed .
Update the list of enterprises participating in the evaluation: According to the ranking of crude steel production enterprises in 2021 released by the World Steel Association, Techint Group, Ternium, Tenaris and Cleveland Cliffs were added for the first time.
The ranking of technology competitiveness of steel enterprises in the SteelRanking index applies the concept of Quality Grading to evaluate the technological competitiveness of steel enterprises from multiple dimensions, such as revenue capacity, green production capacity, comprehensive operation capacity of process intelligence, product capacity and overall level of patents, high-value patents, recent patents level and patent layout capacity of process technology related patents.
According to the enterprise technology resources and capacity resources, combined with product capabilities, an all-round evaluation index system of steel enterprise technology competitiveness is constructed.Specifically, it includes 3 evaluation sub-systems, with a total of 15 assessment items.Based on big data analysis, a complete set of mathematical models is constructed by combining quantitative indicators with qualitative indicators, and a sound and rigorous evaluation system is established.

The data used in the evaluation are all from the public data published by enterprises, research reports and third-party websites.

The highest score of this Ranking reach 91.92 points in 2022. According to the SteelRanking system, there are 25 enterprises entering Level A (including Level A+, A and A -), accounting for 50%.
Looking at the global steel industry status, Chinese steel enterprises not only occupy a leading position in terms of crude steel production, but also have a dominant position in the A-Level of technology competitiveness.

Nippon Steel VS Baowu China
China Baowu, ranked in the first camp (A+level), is still the benchmark of China's steel industry, topping the technology competitiveness ranking of world steel enterprises for the first time, up one place from last year. Under the special market environment in 2021, the progress of Nippon Steel is slow, down two places compared with the previous year. From the point of score, there is a 2.63 point difference between China Baowu and Nippon Steel in this year.
Hyundai Steel VS Ansteel Group
Ansteel Group and Hyundai Steel ranked 5th and 6th respectively. In terms of ranking, the two enterprises rose and fell one place respectively compared with the ranking in 2021. The steel industry as a whole is constantly developing its technical competitiveness. Although under the continuous influence of the epidemic, Ansteel Group is still developing rapidly, catching up with the top enterprises, which is enough to reflect the technical competitiveness potential of Chinese steel enterprises. In terms of score, Ansteel Group and Hyundai Steel differ by 3.50 points in total scores.
Shougang Group VS ThyssenKrupp
Shougang Group and ThyssenKrupp ranked 7th and 14th respectively, with a difference of 9.07 points in total scores. Compared with the previous year, Shougang Group rose one place and ThyssenKrupp fell three places. Shougang Group, founded in 1919, is a microcosm of China's steel enterprises. ThyssenKrupp is an old German steel industry giant. Shougang Group has been in the top ten of the list for two consecutive years. ThyssenKrupp's advantages are being weakened in the rapid development of application of digitalization and intelligence. The gap between the two old steel enterprises is gradually widening.
